Lesioning

Lesioning

Lesioning is less commonly used than deep brain stimulation (DBS) but may be utilised in patients in advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease (PD) that are refractory for pharmacotherapy and contraindicated for DBS. Lesions are usually generated in either the subthalamic nucleus or thalamus using the temporary implantation of an electrode and application of a current to cauterise the tissue. Unlike DBS, lesioning is irreversible.
