Role of pramipexole in the management of Parkinson's disease
CNS Drugs. 2010 Oct 1;24(10):829-41. doi: 10.2165/11585090-000000000-00000
Pramipexole, a non-ergolinic dopamine agonist, is currently indicated for the treatment of symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The authors document the launch of an extended-release formulation of pramipexole in both the US and Europe, developed in order to improve ease-of-use, compliance and provide a more continuous therapeutic effect over 24 hours. Studies indicate pramipexole is effective as adjunctive therapy in patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease, and also suggest that as well as providing relief for motor symptoms it may ameliorate non-motor symptoms including depression. Whilst pramipexole is generally well tolerated, it is associated with more adverse effects than levodopa monotherapy.
